mmaakkiinn ..... maybe you would like to read some comments about Greece & Greeks on a slide show calle 'animal abuse Greece' .... it has a dog lying in a pool of blood on a front page .... the guy blasting Greece & Greeks to kingdom come IS GREEK!!! Hooray for an honest non-nationalistic Greek! Hellas should be written without the 'as' at the end, but adding (Hell) that Greece is for animals. Why don't YOU help the African kids too? What else do you do but brag about Greece?

I was a mere tourist back in 1987 when I first visited Greece. The terrible sights of skinny, sick & limping dogs/cats etc etc prompted me to set up a charity to help animals in Greece. We've been helping a number of shelters there ever since... and finding loving homes ABROAD for some of the dogs/cats, because-in genral- Greek people don't adopt strays from the street or from the shelters and even the pedigree dogs they sometimes buy, often end up being dumped after a while...

"Putting them to sleep" in a civilised country is not laying poison bait, or feeding them food with crushed glass hidden in it, so that their stomachs rupture and they have a long vile death. Owned cats and dogs cannot discriminate what has been poisoned and so they end up as the accidental victims as well. Greece is hugely wealthy bringing in billions of tourist euros, so there is no excuse for not affording anything. Neutering programs and common sense is what is needed but ..to be continued

Considering that Greece is NOT an impoverished third world country and has been a member of the EU since 1981 (and as such receives billions of euros in subsidies), it's appalling that 'FOLA' is still used to get rid of stray dogs and cats, born mainly because people don't sterilise their animals, thus they breed uncontrollably. Why would so many foreign societies (in Germany, Denmark, Holland & UK)have been set up ESPECIALLY to help animals in Greece if they were treated humanely?

You have many noble fore-fathers who had far more respect for animals than the modern Greeks. Read up on what Plato, Plutarch, Socrates, Aristotle, Hippocrates and many others had to say about animals!! They would be turning in their graves if they knew how animals are being treated in Greece today! I have many Greek friends (animal rescuers etc) who are even more outspoken than I am and Greece is theor 'mother' country! Many are ashamed to be Greeks!

bonnie I understand what your saying,but the same has to be said for many other COUNTRIES as well,it happens in ITALY,SPAIN,ALBANIA,BULGARIA and the USA..in the USA in towns and suburbs in CALIFORNIA and NEW YORK..dogs are put to fight to the DEATH,MEXICO same situation COCK and DOGFIGHTING to the death and drowned if they lose..why are you specificly picking GREECE,it happens all over the world and its a shame,but this VIDEO has to do with the BEAUTIES of GREECE..what PLATO and ARISTOTLE LOVED

But it's GREECE I went on holiday to in 1987 (not Italy, Spain etc) and it was there that I saw sights which haunt me to this day. My husband and I drove to Greece (first proper holiday in 12 years) and travelled around for a month .... a month of tears and heartache!! For an EU country, I found it totally unacceptable to see so much cruelty...out in the open, not 'hidden'- dogs chained to rusty oil drums, 'guarding' nothing etc etc!! Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch etc LOVED and RESPECTED animals!

You are right, 'on the outside', Greece is a VERY beautiful country, but for me, all that beauty pales into insignificance when I see innocent animals being abused and neglected. That is NOT a civilised behaviour! I visit Greece annually, but NOT as a tourist - I go and see some of those (including many Greeks) who do all they can to help as many animals as they can. Talk about a 'Greek tragedy'... look no further!!

PLUS the SITUATION is not that BAD as you think...I have visited GREECE recently and I have not seen many dogs astray..now if your talking about villages up in the MOUNTAINS that organazations CAN NOT VISIT FREQEUNTLY BECAUSE OF DISTANCE..WELL THEY CANT BE EVERYWHERE..AND i KNOW VERY WELL THAT PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO PROTECT ANIMALS IN Greece AND if Abuse OCCURS THEY REPORT IT common citizens are doing their best..SO IM proud for THEM and IM proud of being GREEK, dont put everyone in the same POT.

You are removed from reality!!! I could put you in touch with Greek and foreign residents of all the major cities/towns and they could tell you the TRUTH of the situation. The laws exist on paper only...the abusers/killers (poisoners, hangers etc) are very rarely prosecuted, because those who know who they are are too scared of reprisals to report them. Look at a slide show called 'animal abuse - Kos'... everybody knows who hanged the dogs in Kardamena,including the mayor, but nobody's talking.

You're right about asia etc.& I personally wouldnt expect anything else from them! However,Greece is supposed to be the cradle of civilisation but flouts more laws than any other country in the EU and sadly has one of the worst reputations for animal abuse in the EU. You are fortunate if you havent witnessed this yourself but believe me it happens and it is sickening, not only widespread poisoning but horrific abuse to animals carried out by their owners. Decent Greek people can help stop this.

Greece is absolutely beautiful scenery-wise and the people hospitable so it could be perfect but it is ruined by this barbaric cruelty and for me, I could never visit again, nor would my friends and relatives.

BUT GREEK people are HELPING in the SITUATION..plus why must they pay for what a FEW hundred do..most of these GOOD PEOPLE depend on TOURISM to feed their FAMILIES..LOOK there is an OVERPOPULATION of CATS and DOGS ..what do you want them to do..chase animals all day in the fields and mountains and collect them..its not there job..so dont make them pay..again I live in THE GOOD OLE USA and I hear of HUNDREDS of CASES of ABUSE IN THE USA everyday..even though there are so many protection agencies

I live in A big CITY IN THE USA..I HAVE 3 STRAY CATS that visit my YARD ...I feed them often...3 years now DO YOU THINK ANYONE came TO COLLECT THEM...NO!!!!WILL THIS make me LEAVE the USA ...NO!!!!just because a few neighbors dont care..for that same reason I (will) VISIT my BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY of GREECE and for the GOOD GREEK PEOPLE THAT EXIST...I will not let innocent people pay for some-one elses SINS...

I truly hope you will make your own investigations as you obviously have a kind heart if you feed these 3 strays and help the plight of the greek animals.
I must say it is nice and makes a change to have comments, even if I dont agree with them necessarily, without the usual vile language and abuse, so thank you for that.
